Faux Stained Glass

If you've read my post on How to Decorate Paper Mache Easter Eggs, you may remember the Tim Holtz Alcohol Ink Air Splatter technique I used to create the really colorful eggs.

Since sealing the paper mache eggs with Mod Podge worked, I figure it'd work on other paper mache items, like this star box:



Then I thought...Hmmmm...glass is non-porous and glossy...why not try it on a small votive. And wow, it turned out great!!




I cleaned the glass off first with rubbing alcohol. Then I added a drop or two of alcohol ink at a time and then sprooshed it with the canned air. Sooooo cool!

Edited to add: I read on the alcohol ink labels something about it giving off toxic fumes when heated, so beware if you're using this craft near an open flame.

    That is soooo pretty! Do you have to order the alcohol ink and archival pad from his website or is it something you can buy at Hobby Lobby? I just hate paying for postage.

    I, too, think this would look awesome with a votive candle in it. I haven't tried it yet, since I gave this little votive away to a friend for a craft swap.

    Lanie - I got my alcohol inks online from Hobby Lobby, so their physical stores should have them. I didn't use the archival pad in this craft. I just put on a drop or two of ink on the glass and then sprooshed away with the canned air. :)

    Great idea! I've had several alcohol inks sitting around for a while that I need to dig out. Does it dry on the glass? Like I said, I've never used it and don't know much about the product. Thanks!

    Hi, Jamie -

    The drops of alcohol ink dries pretty quickly cuz it's made with alcohol; plus, by sprooshing it with canned air, it dries almost entirely. It doesn't dry totally so you'll have to be a bit careful, but it's really fun to play with.

    Sybillinart - I haven't tried lighting a tealight yet since I gave the votive holder in the post away to a swap buddy. But I'm going to be making another soon cuz I really want to see the effect. I might actually use a washed glass jar from some spaghetti sauce and use that to make a container candle. Then I'll light 'er up and see what it looks like.
