Due to the continual appalling behavior of blogger, I've now moved to my own WordPress blog. I exported my posts from this blog and three others over to ScreamingSardine. I hope you'll join me over there. Are they bent on self-destruction, or what!?!

Anyhoo, here are the rest of the features from the Sunburnt Cow Link Party of last week.

Verry Merry Vintage Style made me wish my computer had smell-o-vision! Mmmmm, I love lilacs and their fragrance. What a beautiful idea of putting them in a silver champagne cooler.

Shabby TX Cowgirl brought to the party some great frames that her hubby has been helping her make. I'm so smitten by chickenwire frames. One of these days I'll make one. I have so much chickenwire left over from the building of my chicken-less chicken coop - lol!

Rissa from Hazel and Honeysuckle is awesome at making Anthro inspired knock-offs.

Pat, one of the featured artisans at Handmade Teddy Bears and Raggedies came to the party with a lovely young lady - yet another adorable rag doll.

Snowflakes and Dragonflies made great canisters for her dog treats. I'm going to have to do this, as now it's getting into bug season here, and something like this will keep them out!

Last but not least is MeiJo's Joy and her beautiful basket made with soap! How clever and unique.

This week's party is still going on if y'all want to link up!Screaming Sardinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07408212650032427439noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3030140177698590818.post-74099736590324579662011-05-27T23:43:00.017-05:002016-05-15T21:00:44.701-05:00Ribbon Bracelet

Pretty, huh? I made it for the Cottage Charm Giveaway and thought I'd share how I did it.

All I needed to make this bracelet was some yarn and ribbon.

I used the yarn to wind around and around the cardboard center that the ribbon actually came in. It was the perfect size for my wrist. I used white yarn because the ribbon is slightly sheer, and I didn't want the cardboard showing through. Then I wound the ribbon on top of the yarn, and voila! A pretty bracelet!

My future crafts and posts will now be over at ScreamingSardine because blogger screwed up one too many times.
It's my way of giving back to you by hopefully giving you some exposure as well. I will only feature those of you following via Google Friend Connect since I have no idea who follows me through email or feedburner. Also, if no blog is listed for you when I click on your profile, I can't really give a shout out for you. (For some reason, I run into a few profiles of people whom I know have blogs, but their link doesn't show up. Not sure why).

Now on to the spotlights!

Michelle's Bears features some amazing bears, and even a rabbit or two. In fact, I recently purchased a gorgeous bunny rabbit from her, and she does awesome work!

Snowflakes and Dragons is another one I know has a blog, but it doesn't show up when I click on her icon in my followers widget. Fortunately, I recognize the name since she has partied at my Sunburnt Cow link party. Her About Me page states she's a "Mom, wife, daughter, sister, aunt, niece, friend. These are just a few words to describe me. I work a full 40 outside the home and heaven only knows how many inside the home. I have a great husband, two teenage daughters, two cats and two dogs to keep me busy." She's also quite a talented crafter!

Audra and Blake are a young married couple with a cute baby boy who is about to turn a year old.

Firecracker Kid makes some very nice wood pieces.

Mommy Living the Life of Riley features a lot of giveaways and reviews. She describes herself as " stay-at-home mom who loves being the 'June Cleaver' for her family and also enjoys product reviews, contests and sweepstakes too!"Screaming Sardinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07408212650032427439noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3030140177698590818.post-14881848322226523332011-05-26T21:29:00.000-05:002011-05-26T21:29:17.742-05:00Sunburnt Cow Link Party Features #10, Part 1As usual, I'm featuring everyone who linked up to the Sunburnt Cow link party last week. There's a new link party going on from now until Sunday night.Screaming Sardinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07408212650032427439noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3030140177698590818.post-2155255193979692972011-05-25T14:08:00.004-05:002011-05-25T14:15:26.563-05:00Just VentingI tell ya, I'm just about ready to burst a blood vessel! I'm trying to learn how to do something, and I've asked two people (who know how to do it) to tell me, step by step, how to do it. They don't. They just assume that I know from the very get go how to do about ten steps. I tell them I don't know how to do anything, just please tell me step by step what I do...from the very first click of the keyboard and/or mouse.

Is it really that hard to understand that I know nada, zip, zilch!?! Ugh!

If I'm explaining doing something on a computer, I go step by step. I have one window open where I can explain how to do the task, with another window open going step by step, typing out the instructions.

Why can't people do that?

What's also frustrating is that I've asked both of these people a very specific question, even telling the second person that the first person didn't answer my question but just breezed right over it, and the second person also didn't answer my question. #*($)#($*#()$*

I don't think of myself as a teacher, but dang, assume people know nothing (especially when they say they know nothing and they're totally new at the task), and then just go slowly, explaining very step of the way!

AAARRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

I think maybe teaching is in my future, cuz this is ridiculous. Sometimes I feel like I'm doing overkill on some of my tutorials here, so I've lightened up in the explanation department, but not anymore. People want to know things, and not have someone skip over ten steps.

I want to spotlight all the followers I have in increments of ten so that each of you can get a public shout out. It's my way of saying how thankful I am to have you as a follower. If I have time, I'll try to get the post up tomorrow, but I'm not making any promises. I've been super busy lately. Even learned to knit yesterday; it's something I've wanted to learn for a long time. Yay!
Lots of stuff got piled up and buried here.

I made it more organized, even using one of my rag quilt bags to hold some craft supplies.
It's helping to cover up a homemade loom (with nails) that my son made me. I like to keep it covered and protected from the pets.

Here's a quilt I was working on many moons ago. Amazing what you find when cleaning up!
Thankfully, they are back in action. Thank you, Blogger, for getting the situation fixed. :) We oftentimes get impatient over the down time, but Blogger is a free platform, and they've done marvelously for being a free service. I do wish they would've kept us more informed, though. :)

Here's a little wall hanging I did using the tinfoil paint technique over a piece of cardboard from a pasta package. Then I painted some corrugated cardboard and glued the two together.
This weave a basket tutorial isn't all that complicated. In fact, it just looks woven, but it's not in the traditional sense. Plus, it's a box, not a basket. :) In fact, the above woven basket started out as a Ramen noodle box; you know, the big box that has a dozen of the package noodles.

I took pictures for this tutorial using various size boxes, such as

Get two coordinating fabrics and cut them into long strips. The length of the strips will depend upon how long your box is around, and how long it is wrapping the strips from the top of one side, around the bottom, and up the opposite side. The strips you use for going around should all be the same fabric, while the strips going down, around the bottom and back up the top should be of the second fabric.

Glue each strip along the top and hold in place with clothespins.

Then go all the way around the box to the opposite side, gluing the opposite end. Make sure you do it somewhat loosely, since you'll be weaving the other strips of fabric in and out in the next step.

For the fabric strips that you'll be weaving around the box, put some glue on one end, and fold it in a bit, like this.

Then put that glued end underneath one of the strips at the top of your box and start going around, weaving in and out of the fabric strips already there.

A note about the bottom: I also did the in and out weaving on the bottom as well. I turned one a bit so you could see how I was weaving.

I tried it with some braided jeans, but I'm just kinda meh about that box. I knew that the braiding wouldn't be tight, so some of the box would show through. Because of that, I glued some jeans fabric onto the box, then started gluing the braided strips.

The braids are just too unwieldy since they're thicker, so they're too loose.

I might get some strips of jeans and weave them in and out of the braiding. I'm not sure yet.
At any rate, glue coordinating material on the inside of the box, and you're finished!
(See my example on my Funky Fabric Wreath post). As I started down this journey of link parties, I saw something had to be done. After all, it looks way too cluttered with all those various size button banners; plus, I wondered if people would even take time to scroll down that hodge podge maze of buttons to even comment. And, since I love comments (as do all bloggers), I wanted to make it easy for my readers to comment. Hmmm...better make those buttons a more uniform size, thought I. (See example in my Braided Yarn Wreath Tutorial).

You will have to get your eyeballs down and dirty with html, my dear friends, because that's what it takes to make these nifty buttons uniform and thus, attractive on your blog entries.

Oh, and before I forget, I also read a post somewhere that if you want readers to take your blog seriously, it's going to have to look attractive and not cluttered. So if you prefer to put your buttons on your side bar, it's a good idea to make them uniform in size as well.

Anyhoo...first things first...

Resizing those buttons.

I use the "Paint" program that came with my new laptop. (I have another program that I used when building websites, but that's on my dinosaur computer that I prefer to let sleep nowadays). If you haven't learned "Paint," it's pretty easy. Simply open a photo in "Paint" and choose the "Resize" option. Choose the pixels option and make it whatever size you want. For my blog posts, I made them 75 x 75 pixels. Some banners are oddly shaped, so they may not be exactly 75 x 75 when you resize. I always made sure to keep the horizontal at 75 since I wanted a certain amount to fit in a row. (On my sidebar, I have them 100 x 100).

Once you have it resized, make sure you save it!

Now comes the tricky part...the html coding.

Since the buttons for the link parties you're participating in are hosted elsewhere and are in different sizes, you're now going to have to host those buttons somewhere since you've resized them according to your needs. I use my blog to do the hosting, creating a draft post and keeping all of the resized buttons in there.

I'll use my link party as an example. (By the way, it's from Wednesdays through Sundays, and you can link up so many different things, even things you have for sale. Okay, end shameless plug). :)

See the coding below the button?

Save all of that coding into your draft blog post. I'm going to break it down little by little, so you'll know what you can throw out and what you can keep.

The first part, between the first set of bird beak brackets is basically telling the program to center the button. See the div align="center"? Well, you don't want to be centering any of these buttons because then they won't line up in a uniform fashion on your blog post. They'll be centering themselves, and you definitely don't want that. After all, you're doing this to get rid of all the mish mash. So totally delete that first set of bird beak brackets. Once you do, however, you're going to have to delete the closing div tag, which is at the very end of the whole coding in its very own bird beak brackets. Once you open something, you gotta close it, and once you delete the opening, you gotta delete the closing; otherwise, Blogger won't let you even save it this way because it's unacceptable coding.

Now we get to what you want, the "a href" part. After the "a href," you'll see an equals sign and a quotation mark. (I'm purposefully not putting in the actual marks because blogger might start coding this baby up, and all you'll see is the end product).

Inside the quotation marks is the link party's url. You want that! If there's anything else like title, you can leave that in there. You don't want to be deleting too much if you don't know html.

After that first bird beak bracket that is telling your blog software the url to the link party, you'll see a second bracket. This one contains the button and the url where it's located. This is the one you'll be changing.

To recap, you now have the link party button coding in your blog post because you put it in there like you usually do when you link up to link parties. You may have made some changes to the first part where there are directions such as "center."

Now to the second part - the image source (img src) part.

The url in the quotation marks after the img src equation is where the person who is hosting the link party has her button stored. You have to replace that since that button is too big. You want to replace it with your newly resized button. It's at this point where I upload the new button from my computer. (Remember, I saved it after I resized it in Paint)?

I upload it directly after this coding that I'm working on so I can have the two handy and I can easily compare.

When you upload to Blogger, they have a whole bunch of gobbledy gook that you don't need for this purpose (like div class, etc). Ignore the first bird beak bracket, and zero in on the second one. You'll see the familiar "img" and "src," only, unfortunately, it's separated by a bunch of gobbledy gook. What I do is delete out everything that separates "img" and "src," except do put a space between the two. I then replace the original link party button url (remember, where the original button is hosted in its full size) with the new url that Blogger just gave me. It's the one in quotation marks that you just received when you uploaded your newly sized button (and after "img src." It has a bunch of capital letters and numbers in it, with the main address being at blogspot.com).

And that's pretty much it! You're just replacing one url (where the original button is hosted) with a new url (where you're newly sized button is now housed on your blog).

Clear as mud?

I hope it's clearer than that! Please ask questions because sometimes I think I'm explaining something in a coherent fashion, but since I'm too close to the situation, I might be forgetting something.

If you're feeling really bold, you can always delete things that say "Photobucket," but make sure if you're in deleting mode, you keep the original code somewhere in case you deleted something you shouldn't.

To me, html coding is all a matter of copying, pasting, and playing "I Spy" or "Where's Waldo?"

As I mentioned above, I save all my buttons on a draft post on my blog and keep them alphabetically listed by link party title. Then when I link up, I simply copy the party I'm participating in, and then paste it onto my blog post.

I have to admit that I'll probably stop doing this in my next round of link ups due to time constraints. I'll be doing text links instead because they're much easier for me to do. One, because a lot of link parties don't have their buttons on the particular party's post, and I have to try to remember what their button looks like if they don't have it readily accessible for all to see. (Or I have to spend time trying to find it). Two, because it's a lot easier and faster for me to simply text link than hunting for the button coding in my draft blog post. Three, text links are much better for SEO purposes, and I would hope that the link party hostesses would appreciate that.

If any of this sounds way too complicated, I'll be glad to resize your buttons for you through a sort of barter exchange. Simply email me (iluvffmn - at - yahoo - dot - com) and maybe we can work something out. :)
How can I ask for more? I now have electricity and was shown some profoundly loving things during this past weekend. (I wrote about it in the previous post - The Worst Blizzard and the Best Lasagna). It's kind of weird how you feel so wiped out after having gone through a huge disruption to your routine, but it's how I feel right now. I have so much already; I'm truly blessed. So I can't really write anything profound and convincing, except to say "Go vote for me please."

But if you're inclined to vote for a wonderful makeover for my home, then please go to Vintage Revivals and vote for my entry in the great giveaway. It's #43 and entitled "Deliverance ala Mandi - I hope." Voting only lasts for a couple days, so hurry and vote for the one you want to win - whether it's me or not. :)Screaming Sardinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07408212650032427439noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3030140177698590818.post-50942163389846592782011-05-01T17:20:00.004-05:002011-05-01T20:26:07.522-05:00The Worst Blizzard and the Best LasagnaIronically last week I wrote on twitter: "What a beautiful day here on the NoDak prairie. Sunny and in the 60s. Hopefully this isn't a teaser, and we get a blizzard next week."

Starting Friday night, the blizzard came sweeping in. It was the worst one I've seen - not snow-wise, but wind-wise. It had sustained gusts of wind that were so strong that it sounded like a train was outside the door. I could hear it over the sound of my little portable clangety clang heater in the bedroom. The electrical lines couldn't take all that pounding, and they finally fell - all up and down this part of the state. Before the power went down, I know they were predicting gusts of 45 mph, but I laugh at that. It was waaaaaay more than that, and they were sustained winds, not gusts. We even had waves in our stream out back - white caps and ducks who refused to be on it because it was so choppy.

My fingers are still cold typing this. The power just came on - about 48 hours later.

We had semis in the ditches, railroad crossing guards blown off, big ol' pine trees toppled, sheds blown over.

It could've been much worse.

It's still cold in this house. It got below 50 - which is the lowest the thermostat registers here. It was so cold even biting into crackers was cold. If you had sensitive teeth, your toofers fer sure wouldn't have liked even the crackers.

It's been difficult but, like I said, it could've been worse - a lot worse. We still have our fingers and toes. No one, to my knowledge, lost their life.

I have to give a shout out to Montana-Dakota Utilities. I know the poor agents who answered the phones got a lot of crap. I just asked if they had an estimated time. From what I and others were told about the situation, the electricity probably should've been out a lot longer. I've read of places on the East coast where they were out for weeks and months, with less problems than what we had here. MDU is amazing in its ability to fix things in a timely manner, and this was a LONG time for them. They know that it gets horrifically cold here and they can't have people be without heat for too long. I know it was below zero with the wind chill overnight Friday and into Saturday.

So I just want to thank them - in case anyone who works for them happens to see this. I also called them up within minutes of the electric being restored and thanked the customer service rep who answered. She literally sounded like she was going to cry because she had been through the wringer and to have someone say thank you was so appreciated. You just never know...so always take time to say thank you. They may need it far more than you will EVER know.

Anyway, now you know the "Worst Blizzard" part of my title. :) As to the "Best Lasagna," well...I tasted the best. It was the best because there was no electric to warm anything up to help us warm up. Eating cold food only made me colder. But I have some friends a couple doors down who have a propane stove. These are the people who have had their kittens brutally and deliberately run over because the husband tried to go by the state laws in this town in order to protect the water and sewer infrastructure. The mayor and her cronies didn't like that, so they got a posse together to finally get him fired so that the mayor's grandson could be hired. I could write a book on what occurred during and after that time, but I won't.

Suffice it to say, my friends are good people. They help one another out. They called me and offered a big ol' casserole dish of piping hot lasagna fresh out of the oven. It was the best lasagna I ever tasted! And the guy across the street lent us his generator as he drove about 40 miles one way to get more gas in an area where they got their electricity back on sooner than us. So we hooked up our frig and at least saved what was in the freezer. What's in the frig is shot. I was surprised at how quickly the food went, esp. when the house was so cold. But that freezer was packed full, so the food packages all kept each other cold. Plus, I had a couple big bottles of ice in there to help keep everything cold.

Then another friend went to the store (again 40 miles away) and asked if I needed anything. He was also going to come by and help us figure out how to work our kerosene heater. I was going to give him 5 gallons of kerosene for his troubles. Alas, as he was about to come over, the electricity came back on. Yay!

What I learned about this incident:
Be grateful for what you have.
Always say "thank you" because you may make someone's day - literally.

The above two I've known about and try to put into regular practice, but I will even more so now.

Other things I learned:
Going to the bathroom, it's hard to wipe when you're bundled up in dozens of layers. Your arm just can't reach around all those coats and robes - lol!

Keep all your emergency supplies in one place. I did not, but I will get better organized now.

Get more dehydrated food and bottled water for the dried food.

Put hand sanitizer in the bathroom and use it instead of washing your hands. When it's cold, that water is like ice, and it'll only make you colder.

Good people rise to the occasion. The inbreds didn't give a crap about anyone in this town but themselves. Have you ever noticed it's the ones who have the least who are the ones who are first to give?

The past 48 hours, I experienced the worst blizzard, but I also experienced the best lasagna - i.e., friends helping friends, even when they don't have much.

Edited to add: Just read an online article about the storm. One stretch had 55 power poles down in a row. Geez, that was some storm!Screaming Sardinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07408212650032427439noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3030140177698590818.post-22355338809011952382011-04-29T19:07:00.002-05:002011-04-29T20:05:43.019-05:00More Features from Link Party! Here are some more features from last week's Sunburnt Cow link party.
Since the link party is relatively new and since I want to show my total appreciation for those who link up and follow the rules, I feature everyone (except my links, of course) who does so. So let's get the awesome show on the road, eh?

Snowflakes and Dragonflies shared a beautifully stenciled table that has a bit of a story behind it.
The parties run every Wednesdays through Sundays. You can link up just about anything: what you've made; what you have for sale (as long as it's in a blog post); anything antique, vintage, prim - whether you've made it or not; even recipes. So let's party!Screaming Sardinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07408212650032427439noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3030140177698590818.post-79448728973792736862011-04-24T16:26:00.054-05:002011-05-09T14:14:08.593-05:00Tinfoil Wreath...and Other Funky CraftsYou ever see one of those craft tutorials you're so smitten with that you have to immediately try - even though you have several others on your to do list? It's not that the others are lesser in any way, it's just that one in particular <strike>speaks</strike> screams at you! Well, Vintage Revivals' tinfoil nightstand was one such tutorial. I just discovered it last week, and my head has been spinning around on what to try it on. I have soooo many ideas, but the wreath and paper mache heart box are my first.

Okay, so you also probably know how some things work out in your head perfectly, but once you start doing it you think you made a terrible wrong turn somewhere, dropped out of reality, and soon you might expect to see Oompa Loompas singing behind chocolate flowers. Yep, that's what happened with my first tinfoil wreath idea.

You see, I had this bright idea that tinfoil would stick to itself in a nice way, and it doesn't all that well - at least not when it's on a non-flat surface.

First of all, I made my own wreath form since the only wreath forms I have right now are straw, and I knew straw would be poking out of the tinfoil in no time. I did my usual cutting of wreath forms out of a Stouffers lasagna box and then sandwiched some fabric remnants between the two cut outs. Of course, the fabric just didn't want to stick in there, so I quick grabbed a big ball of blue cloth strips and started wrapping and stuffing.

Well, thank goodness I picked this blue color, cuz oh boy, the next step did not work - wrapping tinfoil around my makeshift wreath form.
I had to tie the tinfoil strips to keep them in place. Nope, that just ain't gonna work, so I ripped it all off and cut out a wreath form from corrugated cardboard.

I did Mandi's trick from Vintage Revivals and mod podged and smoothed the lightly scrunched up tinfoil with a credit card. (She has much more detailed instructions than I do here). Once dried, I used a mixture of paint and water and painted and dabbed on the wreath.

Once that was good and dry, I added some embellishments, like some gorgeous lace, textured yarn, funky ribbon, and a flower. I also put some beads from a necklace onto floral wire and wrapped it around. I used floral wire to hold the tinfoil part and my blue fabric colored wreath form together. (Said wire was wrapped around both when holding the beads and hiding under the lace and some of the yarn. And voila!

The picture does not do it justice because it is soooo much prettier in person. I think I'm in love!

Then there's something else I'm quite smitten with - the paper mache heart box. Yep, all covered with painted tinfoil.

Here are a couple close ups:
If you try this, make sure you paint the tinfoil pretty good; otherwise, you'll have visions of velvet Elvis paintings intruding in your peaceful mind because it'll look too much like something wrapped in tinfoil. Yick. I used Ranger Heat It Craft Tool on the purple section, and it made the paint stay on better. I think I'm going to be using it more.

Lastly, I put a coat of Mod Podge over the painted tinfoil to seal it in. Forgot to do that with my wreath, but since that's hanging on the wall, it's not as likely to get bumped around and possibly marred. (Although with my acrobatic puppy Tessa, I'm sure she'll start walking on walls soon).
